Not even royals can escape the realities of life. That’s what King Charles has learned in the past few years, as he finds himself battling cancer and dealing with the scandal surrounding his younger brother Andrew. But this knowledge doesn’t make loss any easier to endure.
RadarOnline is reporting that as the King and Queen celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary, the occasion was overshadowed by grief. The monarch is said to be deeply affected by the loss of Richard “Alex” Cobbe, who died at age 81 at the end of March. The King and Queen were married on April 9, 2005, at a civil ceremony.

The designer and collector was a long-time friend of Charles, and a source close to the King said, “This was meant to be a quietly meaningful milestone for the King and Queen, but the timing of Alec’s passing has inevitably cast a shadow over it. He wasn’t just a professional collaborator – he was someone the King had known and trusted for many years, and that kind of loss is deeply felt.”
“In a way, the grief has ruined what should have been a time of joy for Charles,” the source added, though there were no details about whether the couple’s plans for a celebration had changed due to Cobbe’s passing. Cobbe’s closeness with Charles means he was likely close to Camilla as well.
Though the name might not be as familiar to people, Cobbe’s was indeed very important to the British royal family. “Alec played a unique role in the King’s creative world. He wasn’t just contributing pieces – he was helping shape the tone and aesthetic of events that were deeply personal to Charles. Losing someone like that leaves a real gap, especially at a time that would otherwise be celebratory,” sources added.
Around the palace, the mood was not nearly as effusive as in other years. One source said, “There is a sense that this anniversary will be marked in a more reflective way than originally planned. The King is someone who values long-standing relationships, and Alec was very much part of that inner circle.”
Charles has, of course, been dealing with his own mortality of late. Though in December, during Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer broadcast, he revealed that he was doing much better. “Today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders,’ my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year,” he said in the message.
“This milestone is both a personal blessing and a testimony to the remarkable advances that have been made in cancer care in recent years; testimony that I hope may give encouragement to the fifty percent of us who will be diagnosed with the illness at some point in our lives,” the King also added.
King Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February 2024 and has been regularly undergoing treatment since then.
