The Osmonds have lost another family member. Alan Osmond, the eldest member of the group, died on April 20, 2026. A spokesperson confirmed his death in a statement to Utah’s KSL News, adding that his wife, Suzanne, and their eight sons were by his side.

He was 76 years old.

What was Alan Osmond’s cause of death?

Alan Osmond’s cause of death has not been revealed to the public yet, but he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1987.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), MS is a chronic autoimmune neurological disorder in which “the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells.” Symptoms depend on the patient, but MS can cause muscle weakness, vision changes, walking problems, numbness, and more.

“I was on stage and couldn’t raise my right hand,” he previously said, per KSL. “I trusted my Heavenly Father. You have to have opposition in life — this was my test.”

Despite the severity of MS, Alan reportedly never let it get to him. “I just determined when I got it, ‘Hey I may have MS, but MS does not have me,'” he told BYU’s The Universe in December 2013.

His friend, Rod Meldrum, said he “never heard [Alan] complain about it. He’ll joke about it sometimes, but he doesn’t complain about it.” Alan’s wife Suzanne added, “He doesn’t ever use it as an excuse.”

What was Alan Osmond’s health like before his death?

Alan’s brother, Merrill Osmond, paid tribute to him in a Facebook post on Tuesday, April 21. Merrill revealed that Alan was “struggling” a few days before his death.

“Two days before my brother, Alan, passed, I was blessed to sit quietly with him. We talked as brothers do, heart to heart,” Merrill wrote. “He was struggling, but when I shared a joke or two, he found the strength to chuckle… and then he smiled.”

He continued, “My brother has now stepped into the presence of our Father in Heaven with honor and peace. … So please, don’t let your hearts be heavy. Don’t weep for him. Rejoice, knowing that your brother, your friend, your hero is no longer in pain. He is free. He is whole. He is home.”
